Compostable "Plastic"

Brian picked this disposable "plastic" cup up the other day. It's made from corn and both the lid and cup boast to being 100% compostable. This one is put out by Eco-Products. The Hawaii-based company Styrophobia puts out a similar product. Well, it certainly doesn't look compostable, but we'll feed it to our compost worms and see what happens! (Not sure about the straw.)
It's hard to believe that just a few short months ago Hawaii was actually one of several pioneering states considering a ban on styrofoam. The television news reported that the styrofoam containers were 10c more per unit. This added expense to small businesses was probably the reason why the bill did not pass.
As we wait for the solid waste issue to come to a head (yet again!) and hopefully bring to light the ridiculous excess of disposable products on our little island, the take-out places continue to stack their windows with the bulky disposable containers. It's gotta be bad feng shui.
